πŸ“ŠHabit Tracking

Obsibrain provides a powerful habit tracking system integrated with the task management feature, allowing you to create and monitor recurring habits efficiently.

Quick Habit Creation

To create a new habit, simply open the command palette (using the keyboard shortcut Cmd + P) and search for "Obsibrain: New Task". Select the "Habit" option when prompted. This will open a modal where you can enter the habit details.

Prompt to choose between tasks and habit.

You'll be prompted for:

  • Name: Name of the habit

  • Attached: The P.A.R.A. context where the habit lives (e.g., a "Yoga" habit might be attached to your "Health" Area, while "Code Daily" might be part of a "Learn React" Project).

  • Recurrence: How often the habit should repeat (Daily, Weekly, or Monthly)

  • First Due Date: When the first occurrence is due

  • Start Date: When to begin tracking the habit

Understanding Habit Frequency

Habits can have different frequencies. This frequencies will be set automatically when creating a valid habit with a valid recurring date.οΏΌ

Here are the valid occurrences:

  • daily

  • weekly

  • monthly

Note: You can manually edit the habit's frequency by modifying the habitFreq property inline. This flexibility is particularly useful for specific scheduling needs. For example, if you have a workout routine on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, you might prefer to set it as a daily habit view for better tracking.

Managing Your Habits

Habits appear alongside your regular tasks in your task views. For each habit, you have two main actions:

  • Complete: Mark the habit as done for the current occurrence

  • Skip: Indicate you missed the habit for this occurrence

  • Todo: Indicate this habit needs to be done

When you either complete or skip a habit, a new instance will automatically be created for the next occurrence date based on your recurrence settings.

🧘 Identity-Based Habits: Bridging Action and Area

In Obsibrain, habits aren't just repetitive tasks; they are the building blocks of your identity. By attaching a habit to a P.A.R.A. Area, you anchor your daily actions in your long-term vision.

  • The "Why": Don't just "Do Yoga." Attach it to your Health Area. Every time you check it off, you aren't just completing a task; you are casting a vote for the person you want to become.

  • Contextual Mastery: Because habits live within your P.A.R.A. folders, you can see them alongside your research, projects, and goals. This ensures your "doing" is always supported by your "knowing."

πŸ“ˆ Consistency Over Perfection

The Habit Tracker is designed to support sustainable change through a "Fresh Start" psychology:

  • Yearly Visualization: See your progress in a beautiful, GitHub-style contribution grid. This provides instant visual feedback on your consistency over the entire year.

  • The Power of the "Skip": Life happens. Obsibrain includes a "Skip" action so you can honestly acknowledge missed days without breaking your momentum or cluttering your "Todo" list.

  • Annual Reset: Every year, your habit views reset, giving you a psychological fresh start to redefine your routines and realign with your evolving Areas of responsibility.

Using The Habit Tracking System Effectively

The habit tracking system is designed to support consistent behavior change through regular monitoring and feedback. By combining it with the daily planning feature, you can:

  • Build sustainable habits

  • Track your progress over time
